Fr. Sam and Matt had the great pleasure of sitting down Tess Livingstone, a personal friend of Cardinal Pell and the author of George Cardinal Pell: Pax Invictus, A Biography.
They cover quite a bit including: Cardinal Pell's childhood, vocation story, seminary reforms, time as archbishop, the false accusations, convictions, solitary confinement in prison, the Demos memo addressed to the Pope, and Cardinal Pell's work as the Secretariat of the Economy.
There's a lot here, but it's well worth the listen!

In this conversation, Matt and Fr. Sam delve into the profound mystery of the Eucharist, exploring its significance as the sacrament of Christ's presence. They emphasize the importance of receiving (as opposed to "taking") the Eucharist and the other Sacraments. They also connect the Eucharist to the sacrament of marriage, highlighting the theme of self-gift.
Additionally, they address the historical context of belief in the real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, discuss how the Eucharist is Christ's Resurrected Body (but is a re-presentation of the Cross), and dive into the idea of an "Open Table" (Something common to Protestantism but rejected by Catholics).
They also discuss how the priesthood of the New Covenant is different than that of the Old Covenant, how Jesus is a Priest in the Order of Melchizedek, what the types of the Eucharist are in the Old Testament, and the necessity of the Eucharist for spiritual growth and salvation (cf. John 6).

This week on the Tangent, Fr. Sam Kachuba and I continue our series on the Sacraments by discussing Confirmation! We discuss why the Bishop has a particular role in this sacrament, what it actually means that Confirmation is a sacrament of maturity, as well as why Confirmation is so important for young Catholics in a secular age.
And of course, Confirmation ≠ graduation.

This week we begin a series of episodes on understanding the sacraments, in which Fr. Sam and I will dedicate an individual episode (or two) to each sacrament. We begin with baptism. We discuss the transformative power of baptism, the biblical types of baptism, how we're baptized in Jesus's death, and how we live out the grace of the Holy Spirit, given to us in baptism. We also touch on the role of parents in developing the faith of their child and understanding how we are baptized priests, prophets and kings.
If you do find this series fruitful, please share it with others that you think would benefit from it!

We discuss why going to EITHER the Novus Ordo Mass or Traditional Latin Mass doesn't guarantee a greater participation, the importance of maintaining liturgical practices, the impact of these traditions on faith and community, and the significance of symbols in faith, especially in the liturgy and art.
We also discuss how to cultivate a deeper understanding of scripture in a materialistic culture. The discussion emphasizes the beauty of the liturgy and the need for a symbolic imagination to appreciate the richness of the faith.

This week, Fr. Sam and I welcome Matthew Wiseman to discuss his unique journey from a Southern Baptist upbringing to exploring the Hebrew Roots Movement to joining the Anglican Church to becoming a Catholic. We discuss everything from the challenges of living a kosher lifestyle in Texas, the significance of practicing the faith as a family, the true Jewish Roots of Christ in the Gospels and why Catholics used to rinse their hands with holy water prior to picking up the Scriptures.
We also touch on the sacramental theology of the Mass, how it makes the invisible visible, and why it’s so important we see the reality behind sacraments and symbols.
I hope you enjoy this week’s episode of the Tangent!

Fr. Sam Kachuba and Matt Sperrazza discuss Christmas by turning to CS Lewis's essay "What Christmas Means to Me". Is the business of Christmas good? How does one balance secular vs religious traditions. How should Christians celebrate Christmas properly?
